Complications are best divided into two groups: common but insignificant, and; uncommon but serious
1. Common but insignificant complications include bruising, swelling and scarring:
Bruising and swelling are short lived and recede over 1-2 weeks
The surgical scar is permanent but fades with time becoming difficult to see
2. Uncommon but serious complications include infection, capsule formation, implant displacement, asymmetry and abnormal scarring:
Infection, if it occurs, usually necessitates removal of the implant. A new implant can be inserted after a period of several months. In a small percentage of cases the infection can be successfully treated with antibiotics.
Capsule formation occurs to a minor degree around all implants, however in a small number of patients the capsule changes the shape of the breast and may even cause pain resulting in the need for further surgery.
Implant displacement almost always requires a second operation to re-position the implant
Asymmetry can occur after breast augmentation surgery and often represents the accentuation of a pre-existing condition
Abnormal scarring is very uncommon but is more likely to occur in patients with darker skin types
Pain
Pain is marginally worse when the implant is placed under the muscle as compared to over the muscle
Pain after surgery tends to be short lived, mild to moderate in intensity and is well controlled with prescribed medications
Time off work
We recommend my patients take 1-2 weeks off work after surgery
If it is absolutely necessary patients can return to work after 1 week rather than 2, depending on the physical demands of their work
Exercise
We encourage early, gentle exercise, such as walking, from the first day after surgery
During the 1st 6 weeks after surgery we are happy for patients to gradually build up the intensity of their leg exercises, without involving the arms or chest
Patients should not lift anything heavier than 2kg during the 1st 6 weeks
After the 1st 6 weeks have passed unrestricted exercise is permitted including arm and chest work
Patients should not swim for the 1st 3 weeks after surgery and avoid swimming training for the 1st 6 weeks
Garments and dressings
No underwire bras should be worn for 6 weeks after surgery
Patients should wear their support garment/sports bra night and day for 3 weeks, only removing it to bathe, then during the daytime only for a further 3 weeks
Dressings remain in place along the scar for a total of 6 weeks.
